26 Life Lessons for Kids Series

Life Lessons for Kids was spawned by observing peaceful and productive adults and the dominant core values they embodied. I wanted to share them with parents.  There ended up only being 14 of the 26 as I moved from blogging to Amazingly Deep Thoughts on Youtube.

Using what I learned raising my own 5 children and studying for my degree in Biblical Counseling, I have been breaking these Life Lessons into bite size pieces with real life examples to help teach parents how to teach their kids.

It is hard to say that one is more valuable than another because they build and interweave into the makeup of who we are and how we think.

1. Happiness is a Choice

Happiness is a Choice - truthandsong.com

I remember reading a book called, “Happiness is a Choice” as a young adult and it just stuck with me.  I also remember times in my life where I have struggled to believe that this Life Lesson for Kids could actually be practical.  Here are the things that I have learned about people and kids and how to actually choose to be happy. … read more

2. The Most Important Thing is Assigning Blame … Not Really

truthandsong.com

When someone has hurt you, especially repeatedly, it is difficult enough to forgive, but to love is a whole other mountain.  Maybe, you played a small or big part in the wrong doing.  Maybe you did nothing wrong.  Either way you may start acting as if “The Most Important Thing Is Assigning Blame“ rather than following a biblical pattern for living. … read more

3. Act.  Don’t React.

Act. Don't React. - truthandsong.com

“Act. Don’t react.”  It seemed too late to teach that life lesson to their daughter now.  Sitting down to talk with her was always stressful.  She had never been taught how to act in the heat of the moment.  She just reacted. … read more

4. Take Correction Well

Take Correction Well - Life Lessons # 4 - truthandsong.com

I’m going to admit one of those stories from childhood that makes me cringe every time I think of it.  But first let me tell you, if I had been taught from an early age how to take correction well then many of the choices I made throughout my youth could have been different. … read more

5. Read Your Bible.  Pray Every Day

Read Your Bible. Pray Every Day. - 26 Life Lessons. How and Why To Teach Them To Your Children. - truthandsong.com

I was recently overwhelmed with the daunting task of raising and training my children.  HA!  I laugh because I get overwhelmed with this prospect over and over, so saying it was “recently” seems silly.  But, especially as the homeschool year approaches I start thinking, “How am I supposed to get it all done?”

Let’s face it.  A mom’s job is about 90% time and asset management.  Under our husband’s lead, we figure out the priorities, we find a balance and we go at it.

I started praying and reading the Bible in regards to God’s priorities in raising children … read more

6. You Can’t Control Other People’s Choices

You Can't Control Other's Choices - Pinterest Size

My oldest daughter has the “mommy syndrome.”  She tells her sibling to “give me back my toy” or “you shouldn’t touch that” and then expects immediate obedience.  I usually catch the scenario as the younger sibling is screaming and the oldest is grasping the child’s hand and pulling the said item away.

There is a verse that says that “Jesus sighed within himself.”  That would describe me in this situation that I have encountered numerous times.  But it is a reminder to me of something I read years ago in a child training book. … read more

7. Don’t Make It All About You

I want to tell you an embarrassing story.

The other day I was driving through my neighborhood and looking at some renovations they were making and I thought, “I love my town, but it will never compare to ….” And time came to a screeching halt in my mind.

“TAP! TAP! TAP!” went the Holy Spirit to my heart.  “Melissa?”  Oh man!  I was caught red-handed.  I was thinking about me, instead of God? … read more

8. The Foolish Man Spendeth It Up

Foolish Man Spendeth it Up - Pinterest Size copy

I have a child who has the proverbial hole in her pocket.  She gets her birthday money and when we go grocery shopping she stands at the checkout line saying, “Ooooooh! Hey mom!  What about Beef Jerky?”

“Really?  Beef Jerky?  You want to spend your birthday money on Beef Jerky?”… read more

9. Think With Your Head, Not With Your Heart

Think with your head; not with your heart. Life Lessons - TruthandSong

My kids were watching a very sweet children’s movie full of adventure, imagination, and fancy.  In fact, I was surprised, because there are very few purely innocent children’s movies anymore.  They were nearing the end and “Laura” the hero of the movie had to make a decision: 1. a decision based on her own understanding, or 2. follow her heart. … read more

10.  Life Is Not Fair

Life Is Not Fair - Life Lessons for Kids - Truth and Song

I just don’t know how many times I hear someone say, “Well, that’s not very fair.”  To which my mental response is always, “Well, life is not fair.  No one ever said it would be.”  The sooner we learn this Life Lesson For Kids, the better our entire life will be, and our children’s too. … read more

11. Don’t Be Afraid of Truth

Don't Be Afraid of Truth

Don’t Be Afraid of Truth.  That doesn’t sound too difficult, until your kids start asking questions about your mistakes, or which founding father was actually saved, or about why God killed all the animals in Jericho.  But the truth is so important, and your honesty and candidness will develop their trust in you and hopefully and ultimately God’s word.  Anything less is detrimental. … read more

12. Smile Though Your Heart Is Aching

Smile Though Your Heart Is Aching - Life Lesson 12

I remember as a child playing the song Smile Though Your Heart is Aching by Charlie Chaplin over and over again.  Simple things impact children.  That old organ book I found, and that little phrase had a profound influence on my mind years later.  (Oh, the power of music). While I wouldn’t suggest that you never share your heart with someone you trust when you need a shoulder to lean upon, or really that you add Charlie Chaplin as a list of heroes … the title of the song is a little reminder that this too will pass.  You will feel joy again.  Just keep on keepin’ on. …read more

Truth and Song - The Bible's Way is the BEST Way

When we are at a fork in the road, we don’t have the vantage point to see what is up ahead.  But God does.  This is why He has given us such clear instruction on how to live our lives.  The Bible’s way is the best way in both faith AND practice. … read more

Stay in Church - Life Lesson 13 - Truth and Song

“Stay in” Church” seems so simple that its importance may not register as an actual life lesson.  But recently, God has highlighted many reasons why church is not just a place of worship but a place of necessity in the Christian life. … read more
