In a time when changing the definition of words is starting to seem more common, I think it is good to look at the terms “Truth” and “Fact” and why some say the Bible isn’t supported by facts but is rather someone’s personal truth … and therefore, not valid to anyone other than the individual who believes it.

Is that true? Is there even truth? Is the Bible supported by facts? That’s what I am covering in this episode and the rest in this series on “Is The Bible Supported By Facts?”

For a deeper look into this topic, listen to the podcast at one of the links above, for a brief overview of the points keep reading.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TRUTH AND FACTS?

Characteristics of facts:

  1. If we take every science book and every fact and destroyed them all, in a thousand years they would all be back because all the same tests would produce the same results.
  2. Facts are PART of truth
  3. Unfortunately, facts can be used to deceive when used out of context.  Therefore facts are not truth.
  4. An isolated fact is like a stray piece of a puzzle.  It is an object, an article, a fragment of information, a bit of trivia.

Characteristics of truth:

  1. Truth is DISCERNED by interpreting facts.
  2. The more facts that support your hypothesis, the more likely it is you have found truth.
  3. Discerning truth is much like a court case.  You are presented facts (evidence) and the jury needs the ability to recognize truth from the WEIGHT of evidence (facts).

IS THE BIBLE SUPPORTED BY FACTS?

I share my story of how Richard Dawkins presented “facts” to suggest that the Bible contradicted itself and when I checked his sources, the sources were quoted incorrectly.  When I posted the correct wording of the sources on Wikipedia, my information was taken down saying they wanted “facts” not “truth.”  They left the incorrect “facts” up.

It is important to check the facts for yourself.

It is with that principle in mind that I am going to spend the next several podcasts sharing what facts support Scripture and why.
